Austen, William. William Austen was created by Anne Hocking and appeared in twenty-eight novels from 1938 to 1968, beginning with Ill Deeds Done.

William Austen is a college-educated, charming, and intelligent Scotland Yard Chief Inspector. He travels across England and the Continent on cases. He is intelligent and skillful in dealing with tricky cases and close-mouthed suspects. He is assisted by Inspector Curtis and Sergeant Flyte.
