Arnold, Shadrack. Shadrack Arnold was created by Verne Chute (Henry McVey) and appeared in “Never Trust the Obvious” (Short Stories, Oct. 10, 1944) and “Shad Tries the Free Lunch” (Short Stories, Feb. 10, 1945).

In the dusty town of Granville Shadrack Arnold is a gaunt, tall, twenty-four-year-old delivery boy for Old Man Carter’s grocery store. He’s also a private detective, having received a diploma by mail from Investigators, Incorporated, of St. Louis. Arnold longs to be a respected crime-solver, and fortunately for him, he is, more or less by chance, in the right place at the right time to solve some crimes and gain a small amount of fame.
