Ameer, Ishmael. Ishmael Ameer was created by Hall Caine and appeared in the play The White Prophet (1908); the play was expanded into the serial “The White Prophet” (The Strand, Dec. 1908-Nov. 1909) which was in turn collected and published as the novel The White Prophet (1909).

Ishmael Ameer is a Libyan orphan, raised in Khartoum and then Cairo, who graduated from “the Arabic University” and became a devout prophet of Islam. Helena Graves is the daughter of General Graves, a British Army officer stationed in Egypt. Gordon Lord is a Colonel in the Army. Against a backdrop of colonial oppression and native unrest, the three become entangled, with Ameer marrying Graves (against her wishes) but eventually letting her go and returning to the desert.
