Nightro. “Some men would come out of the experience described here with guns blazing. Others would be whipped down. Only a few could be strong and clever enough to emerge as Hugh Goddard did. Today—eyes crippled so he must move in darkness—this changed man strikes wherever he finds injustice buried beyond the law’s reach in mystery outwitting crime’s wizards with their own tricks. He takes what has been stolen! He gives the loot to persons suffering from others’ greed and uses it to rescue the desperate.” Goddard is a young scientist who discovers some radium in Alaska but is left to die in the snow by a crooked assistant. He suffers from snow blindness but is rescued by “kindly Eskimos” and returns to the mainland. He’s not totally blind, though; he suffers from a “peculiar affliction” which allows him to see through “poloroid glass,” including seeing in the dark. He turns his disability to good use and begins fighting crime at night with the help of his dog Blackie. He appears in stories with titles like “Suicide Circle,” “Fu Tong,” and “Rocket to the Moon.”

First Appearance: Daredevil Comics #2 (Lev Gleason), Aug 1941. 7 appearances, 1941-1942. Created by Dick Wood and George Roussos.
